WHITE FLAG AT OPERA BALLET VLAANDEREN

NEW thEAtRE SCORE (APRIL 2024)

New co production between Theater Neumarkt (Zurich) and Opera Ballet Vlaanderen comes to Ghent, Belgium on April 16th,17th and 18th, 2024.

Following 'Learning How To Walk' (NTGent 2016) and 'White People's Problems' (Schauspielhaus Bochum),  Bart Demey and Tania Gallagher collaborate with director Benny Claessens for the third time.

Press Release from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen :

All will be well, a new beginning has come!’, goddesses in ancient myths always seem to sing when the end of a crisis is in sight, drying the tears of mankind. Director Benny Claessens, together with three contemporary goddesses and a queer chorus, hoists the white flag and leads us to a place of sensual and vulnerable pleasure. A place where we can surrender and do not always have to be strong. Where we dare to rebel against the existing order and try to look at traditional, masculine values such as strength, genius and heroism in a new way.

In the twilight of dawn, Benny’s goddesses (Challenge Gumbodete, Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe and Teresa Vittucci) sing of surrender as the last form of resistance. White Flag is a hybrid performance with live film, music, theatre… and lots of pink plush. The result: an entertaining and visually stunning performance. To hell with geniuses and heroes. A new beginning lies ahead.

UP YOUR ASS

NEW THEATRE SCORE (Premiere 08,09,10 November 2023) NEW DATES IN 2024!

Why I shot Andy Warhol and other chit-chat
Russel: “The two-sex system must be right, because it has been there for ages”
Bongi: “So has disease”

Nona Demey Gallagher & Lieselot Siddiki adapt Up Your Ass, Valerie Solanas' infamous 1965 comedy. The text has had a controversial status in the feminist (queer) community for years, but is now seeing the European theatre light for the first time.

New York, the Sixties. Main character Bongi Perez – a substitute for Solanas herself – is a crude hustler and sex worker. She hangs out on the streets with quite a few eccentric characters, where she fills her days with vulgar discourses, clapping and wooing female passers-by. When she meets Ginger and Russel – a daddy's girl and a male narcissist – a chain of absurd (anti-)intellectual discussions about the state of society immediately ensues. Bongi, Ginger and Russel shamelessly spit their beliefs at each other – resulting in unthinkable and grotesque situations.

Valerie Solanas is best known today for her attack on Andy Warhol, but her literary legacy includes important radical-feminist works, such as SCUM Manifesto and Up Your Ass. After Andy Warhol refused to produce Up Your Ass, Solanas tried to shoot him. Nona and Lieselot got in close contact with Solanas' last living relative and were the first and only ones to get permission to perform Up Your Ass

Music composed by Tania Gallagher and Bart Demey. Performed by JAILBAIT, consisting of Nona Demey Gallagher and Lieselot Siddiki.

First premiere run takes place at CAMPO Gent on 8,9,10 November 2023.
